Livearchitecture collects observations on architecture, as well as other interesting stuff and thinking.
Educated in Scotland, second year architect student Alastair James Hunter holds an Honours Degree in Interior and Environmental Design, and is now undertaking a degree in Architecture at the University of Dundee.
Alastair’s Honours project Rethink Reform was inspired by Harold Wilson’s belief:
“He who rejects change is the architect of decay”
This project re-shapes the form of the bandstand and re-thinks the meaning behind the architectural form. The final result incorporates elements from Edinburgh’s landscape. Providing today’s culture with a re-shaped element of architecture from the past.

This work was based on the findings that the Bandstand was once an iconic focal point of many parks, gardens and piers throughout the world. It provided a stage for entertaining, drawing people and communities together. This cultural magnet has evolved very little over time, failing to adapt to an ever-changing landscape.
Alastair’s project addresses the reality that today’s fast-paced society lacks such traditional and rich togetherness that the bandstand once represented.
